Unit Plan 34 (PreK Library): Sharing Stories and Ideas with Others

Focus: Help PreK children practice sharing simple story responses, book ideas, drawings, puppet retellings, topic choices, and favorite library experiences with a peer, small group, or whole class. Children build confidence by presenting something connected to a book or activity while also practicing respectful audience behavior during reading, listening, viewing, and sharing.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (Sharing IdeasCreative ResponseAudience Skills)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit gives children supported practice sharing something they have read, made, noticed, or enjoyed in library. The sharing can be very simple: showing a drawing of a favorite story part, naming a favorite topic basket, holding up a picture card, using a puppet to retell one moment, or explaining a book choice with a few words or gestures. The goal is to help children feel confident sharing ideas in a way that matches their developmental level.

The unit also teaches children how to be respectful audience members. PreK students practice looking toward the speaker or shared item, listening quietly, waiting for a turn, and responding kindly. The librarian keeps sharing short, structured, and positive so children learn that library is a place where their stories, ideas, creations, and voices are valued.
