Unit Plan 21 (PreK Library): Sorting and Organizing Books

Focus: Help PreK children begin sorting and organizing books, picture cards, baskets, and library materials in simple, age-appropriate ways. Children practice noticing features such as topic, type, color, picture clues, or shared ideas while working with partners or small groups and handling books carefully.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Library (Sorting/GroupingBook OrganizationShared Materials)

Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This PreK library unit introduces children to the idea that books and materials can be grouped in simple ways. Young children are not expected to understand formal library organization systems yet, but they can begin noticing that some books are about animals, some books tell stories, some books show weather, some books have trucks, and some books belong together because they share a clear topic or feature.

The librarian can use baskets, bins, picture labels, book covers, and topic cards to make sorting concrete. Children may help place books into baskets labeled animals, stories, weather, colors, transportation, families, or seasons. The goal is to build early classification skills while also reinforcing careful handling, shared work, and the idea that organizing materials helps everyone find and enjoy books.
