Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Library (Diverse Stories • Families/Communities • Respectful Listening)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 20–30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This PreK library unit introduces children to stories about different families, homes, traditions, neighborhoods, and community experiences. The goal is gentle exposure, not complex comparison. Children listen to warm, age-appropriate books that help them see that people may live in different places, celebrate in different ways, speak different languages, eat different foods, have different family structures, or enjoy different routines.
The librarian guides children to notice both similarities and differences in respectful ways. Children may say, “I do that too,” “That is different from my house,” or “I noticed the family was together.” These simple responses help children understand that the library is a place where many kinds of people, families, stories, and ideas belong.
