I. Introduction

This PreK library unit gives children structured practice working with a partner. Partner work is challenging at this age because children are still learning how to share space, wait for a turn, listen to another person, and use materials together without grabbing or wandering away. The librarian explicitly teaches what partner work looks like: sitting side by side, using gentle hands, taking turns, sharing one set of materials, and listening when a partner has an idea.

Library partner activities should be short, concrete, and highly supported. Children might turn pages together, complete a picture search, sort cards, build a story setting, share a book basket, or choose two books to look at side by side. The goal is not perfect collaboration, but beginning awareness that library learning can happen with another person when both partners have a turn and both partners are included.
