Unit Plan 33 (PreK Social Studies): Caring for Others and Our World
Help PreK children practice kindness, responsibility, and caring for people, the classroom, and the environment through simple, everyday actions.
Focus: Help children notice and practice caring behaviors toward people and places—showing kindness, helping others, and taking responsibility for the classroom, school, and environment.
Grade Level: PreK
Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Community & Character)
Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 15–20 minutes per session
I. Introduction
In this unit, children explore what it means to care for others and our world. Through stories, songs, role-play, and simple clean-up routines, they notice times when they help friends, share materials, and take care of the classroom and environment. Children connect their everyday actions—like picking up toys, using kind words, and putting trash in the bin—to being responsible community members.
By the end of the week, students will be able to name and show caring actions, explain why taking care of people and places is important, and create a “Caring Promise” page to add to a class book about Caring for Others and Our World.
Essential Questions
- What does it mean to care for others?
- How can we help our friends and teachers at school?
- How do we show that we care for our classroom and the earth (our world)?
- Why is it important to be kind and responsible with people and places?
