Unit Plan 33 (PreK Social Studies): Caring for Others and Our World

Focus: Help children notice and practice caring behaviors toward people and places—showing kindness, helping others, and taking responsibility for the classroom, school, and environment.

Grade Level: PreK

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • Community & Character)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 15–20 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, children explore what it means to care for others and our world. Through stories, songs, role-play, and simple clean-up routines, they notice times when they help friends, share materials, and take care of the classroom and environment. Children connect their everyday actions—like picking up toys, using kind words, and putting trash in the bin—to being responsible community members.

By the end of the week, students will be able to name and show caring actions, explain why taking care of people and places is important, and create a “Caring Promise” page to add to a class book about Caring for Others and Our World.

Essential Questions

  • What does it mean to care for others?
  • How can we help our friends and teachers at school?
  • How do we show that we care for our classroom and the earth (our world)?
  • Why is it important to be kind and responsible with people and places?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Name at least one way to show kindness to classmates (sharing, helping, kind words).
  2. Demonstrate at least one caring action for the classroom (cleaning up, putting materials away, pushing in chairs).
  3. Participate in at least one environmental care routine (throwing trash away, recycling where appropriate, watering plants).
  4. Explain in simple language why caring for others and our world matters (“So it stays clean,” “So friends feel happy”).
  5. Create a “Caring Promise” page illustrating a caring action they can practice.

Standards Alignment — PreK (C3-based custom)

  • PK.C3.Civ.5 — Show care and responsibility for the classroom community. Helps clean up, shares materials, and treats others with respect.
    • Example: Returning blocks to the correct shelf after play.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can show that I care about my friends by helping and using kind words.
  • I can show that I care about our classroom by cleaning up and taking care of toys.
  • I can show that I care about our world by putting trash in the bin and helping keep things clean.
  • I can draw and talk about one caring promise I will try to do.
