Unit Plan 14 (Grade 1 Social Studies): Caring for Places We Love

Focus: Help students identify shared spaces (classroom, playground, cafeteria, park) and learn simple ways to care for them through recycling, reusing, and respectful behavior. Emphasize how everyday choices show responsibility and help keep places clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

Grade Level: 1

Subject Area: Social Studies (Geography • Civics • Community)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 30–45 minutes per session

I. Introduction

In this unit, students learn that they are caretakers of the places they use every day. They explore shared spaces such as the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, and local park, and notice what it looks like when a place is cared for—or not cared for. Through stories, pictures, and simple actions, students practice recycling, reusing, putting things away, and using kind, respectful behavior in those spaces. They come to see that small choices can make a big difference in keeping places they love clean, safe, and happy.

Essential Questions

  • What are some places we love and share with other people?
  • How do we show care and respect for our classroom, school, and neighborhood?
  • What is recycling, and how does it help our planet and our community?
  • How can my choices show that I am a responsible citizen in the places I use every day?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Name at least three shared spaces (e.g., classroom, playground, cafeteria, park) and describe what they are used for.
  2. Explain simple actions that care for these places (e.g., putting trash in the bin, recycling paper, returning materials).
  3. Describe what it looks and sounds like to show respect and responsibility in shared spaces (e.g., kind words, gentle hands, waiting turns).
  4. Sort pictures or examples of actions into “caring for places” vs. “hurting places.”
  5. Create a “Caring for Places We Love” mini-poster that shows one place and at least two ways to care for it.

Standards Alignment — 1st Grade (C3-based custom)

  • 1.C3.Geo.5 — Explain how people adapt to and care for places.
    • Example: Clothing for seasons, recycling, picking up litter at a park.
  • 1.C3.Civ.5 — Demonstrate responsibility and respect in diverse communities.
    • Example: Use kind words and care for shared materials; include others.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can name places we share (classroom, playground, cafeteria, park).
  • I can tell at least two ways to care for these places (recycle, throw away trash, put things back).
  • I can explain what respect looks like in shared spaces (quiet voices, kind words, waiting my turn).
  • I can sort actions into helpful/caring and hurtful/messy for our spaces.
  • I can make a poster that shows a place I love and how I will take care of it.
