I. Introduction

This Grade 5 counseling lesson helps students reflect on who they are and who they are becoming. As students prepare for middle school, it is important for them to recognize their strengths, interests, values, leadership qualities, and growth areas. Students learn that confidence is not about being the same as everyone else; it grows from understanding themselves and respecting the different strengths and identities of others.

Students complete an identity map, strengths shield, or reflection activity that helps them describe themselves as learners, friends, classmates, family members, and future middle school students. The counselor emphasizes that personal words, choices, attitudes, and actions can help others feel included, respected, and valued. The goal is for students to build healthy self-awareness while also contributing to a respectful and inclusive school community.

  • How can understanding myself help me feel more confident and prepared for middle school?
