Unit Plan 22 (Grade 6 Social Studies): Sparta and Athens Compared

Focus: Analyze differences in government, education, and military organization between Sparta and Athens, and how those systems shaped roles, rights, and responsibilities.

Grade Level: 6

Subject Area: Social Studies (Civics • History • Culture)

Total Unit Duration: 5 sessions (one week), 50–60 minutes per session


I. Introduction

Students compare two iconic Greek poleis to understand how governance structures affect everyday life. Through primary/secondary source snippets, simulations, and a comparative brief, learners evaluate how citizenship, schooling, and defense reflected each city’s values and power.

Essential Questions

  • How did political structures in Sparta and Athens organize power and participation?
  • In what ways did education and training prepare people for life in each polis?
  • How did military organization influence society, rights, and responsibilities?

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

  1. Compare Athenian and Spartan governments using accurate institutional vocabulary.
  2. Explain differing roles/rights/responsibilities for citizens, women, enslaved/helot peoples, and metics.
  3. Describe how education and military systems (agōgē vs. paideia; hoplite/trireme) shaped civic life.
  4. Use evidence from multiple perspectives to support a comparative claim about the two poleis.

Standards Alignment — 6th Grade (C3-based custom)

  • 6.C3.Civ.2 — Compare structures of governance and decision-making (e.g., assemblies, councils, magistrates).
  • 6.C3.Civ.3 — Explain roles, rights, responsibilities within different systems (citizens, subjects, classes).
  • 6.C3.Hist.3 — Describe diverse perspectives/experiences (gender, class, status; neighboring peoples) using multiple sources.

Success Criteria — Student Language

  • I can diagram who held power in each polis and how decisions were made.
  • I can compare who had rights and responsibilities in Sparta vs. Athens with specific examples.
  • I can use sources from different points of view to support my comparison.
