Unit Plan 5 (Grade K Counselor): Personal Space Bubbles
Teach Kindergarten personal space with space bubbles, ask-first language, safe greetings, line safety, sharing, turn-taking, and safe choices.
Focus: Help students understand personal space in a concrete way. The counselor uses hula hoops, floor spots, or arm-length demonstrations to show how close is too close and how to respect another person’s body space. Students practice asking before touching, standing in line safely, and choosing greetings like waves, high-fives, or thumbs-up.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: School Counseling (Personal Space • Boundaries • Safe Choices)
Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This Kindergarten counseling lesson helps students understand personal space by thinking about an invisible “space bubble” around each person. Students learn that bodies need room to feel safe and comfortable at school. The counselor uses hula hoops, floor spots, arm-length demonstrations, visuals, puppets, or movement practice to make personal space concrete and age appropriate.
Students practice asking before touching, giving classmates room in line, keeping hands and feet safe, and choosing greetings that respect others’ boundaries. They also learn that sharing, taking turns, and waiting are part of safe and respectful school behavior. The goal is for students to understand that respecting personal space helps everyone feel safer, calmer, and ready to learn.
