Unit Plan 26 (Grade K Counselor): Respecting Body Boundaries

Focus: Revisit personal space and safe body boundaries in a clear, child-friendly way. Students learn that everyone has the right to their own body space and that they can say “no,” “stop,” or “I need space.” The counselor reinforces that students should tell a trusted adult if someone is not respecting safe boundaries.

Grade Level: K

Subject Area: School Counseling (Body BoundariesSafetyTrusted Adults)

Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This Kindergarten counseling lesson helps students understand that every person has body space and that body boundaries should be respected. Students learn that safe bodies include keeping hands, feet, and objects to themselves, asking before hugs or touch, and listening when someone says “no,” “stop,” or “I need space.”

The counselor uses puppets, picture cards, safe greeting choices, and simple school scenarios to help students practice respectful body boundaries in the classroom, hallway, playground, carpet area, cafeteria, and centers. Students learn that they can choose a wave, high-five, fist bump, or no greeting, and that they should tell a trusted adult if someone does not respect safe boundaries. The goal is for students to feel confident naming body space, using boundary words, making safe choices, and asking adults for help.
