Unit Plan 9 (Grade K Counselor): We All Belong in Our Class

Focus: Reinforce that every student is an important part of the classroom community. The counselor uses a puzzle, handprint activity, or classroom “we belong” chart to show that each person contributes something special. Students name ways classmates can help one another feel included, safe, and welcome.

Total Unit Duration: 1–2 weeks, 30 minutes per session

I. Introduction

This Kindergarten counseling lesson helps students understand that every person in the class matters. Students learn that a classroom is like a puzzle, team, garden, or family where each person has a place and can help others feel welcome, safe, and included.

The counselor uses a simple class puzzle, handprint activity, puppet scenario, picture sort, or “We Belong” chart to show that everyone contributes to the classroom community. Students practice kind words, helpful actions, listening to classmates, and responding in ways that show care. The goal is for students to feel connected to the class and understand that they can help others belong too.

II. Objectives and Standards

Learning Objectives — Students will be able to:

1. Recognize that they are an important part of the classroom and school community.
2. Identify ways classmates can help one another feel included, safe, and welcome.
3. Use kind words and helpful actions that support belonging.
4. Practice listening when another student or adult is speaking.
5. Respond appropriately to a classmate’s idea, feeling, or sharing.
6. Participate in a class belonging activity, such as a puzzle, handprint chart, “We Belong” poster, or classroom community circle.
7. (Optional Session) Apply belonging skills through picture sorting, puppet practice, partner sharing, a class chart, or a kindness-and-listening reflection.
