I. Introduction

This unit helps Kindergarten students begin developing early reader identity by learning that they can choose books that interest them. At this age, students may not yet read independently, but they can notice covers, pictures, topics, characters, and familiar themes that make a book appealing. The librarian can model how to browse slowly, look at book covers, listen to short book talks, and choose from organized baskets such as animals, trucks, fairy tales, weather, families, or funny stories. The goal is to keep book choice manageable and joyful while helping students understand that their interests can guide their library learning.

Essential Questions

  • How can I choose a book that interests me?
  • What can covers, pictures, topics, and book talks help me notice?
  • How can questions and wonderings help me choose books?
