Unit Plan 29 (Grade K Library): Different Readers, Different Favorites
Kindergarten library unit on reader identity, book choice, belonging, and curiosity as students explore favorite books, topics, formats, and new choices.
Focus: Help Kindergarten students understand that different readers may enjoy different books, topics, formats, and viewpoints, and that all readers belong in the library. Students browse themed baskets, choose books based on their interests, try new books or library experiences with curiosity, and share simple reasons for their preferences.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Library (Reader Identity • Book Choice • Belonging)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Kindergarten students build early reader identity by recognizing that readers do not all have to like the same books. One student may love dinosaur books, another may prefer fairy tales, another may choose funny stories, and another may enjoy factual books about animals or vehicles. The librarian offers several themed baskets and models how students can browse, choose, and explain a simple preference. The unit reinforces that different favorites are welcome in the library and that trying new books, topics, tools, and experiences can help students discover even more about themselves as readers.
Essential Questions
- Why do different readers have different favorites?
- How can I choose books based on my interests, topics, pictures, or recommendations?
- How can I respect a classmate’s book choice if it is different from mine?
- How can trying new books or library experiences help me discover new favorites?
