Unit Plan 6 (Grade K Library): Sharing Materials and Taking Turns
Kindergarten library unit on sharing materials, taking turns, respectful listening, and responsible use of books, puppets, cards, and centers.
Focus: Help Kindergarten students practice sharing materials, taking turns, listening respectfully, and contributing ideas during library learning. Students work with partners or small groups using puppets, sorting cards, retelling tools, or shared book baskets while learning how collaboration can be safe, kind, and productive.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Library (Collaboration • Sharing • Responsible Use of Materials)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit helps Kindergarten students build early collaboration habits in the library. Since young children are still learning how to share materials, wait for a turn, listen to a partner, and contribute to a group task, the unit keeps activities concrete, short, and highly modeled. Students practice working with puppets, sorting cards, retelling tools, shared baskets of books, or simple center materials while the librarian explicitly teaches what it looks like to share fairly and use materials responsibly. The goal is to help students understand that library learning often happens with others, and that kind participation helps everyone enjoy and learn from the activity.
Essential Questions
- How can I share library materials with others?
- What does it look like to take turns and wait patiently?
