Unit Plan 35 (Grade K Library): What Kind of Library Learner Am I?
Kindergarten library unit on learner identity, reader growth, favorite books, tools, and activities through reflection, choice, and sharing.
Focus: Help Kindergarten students reflect on the kinds of books, topics, tools, activities, and responses they enjoy most in library. Students explore familiar options, name preferences, try or revisit library experiences with curiosity, and create or share something that shows who they are becoming as readers and library learners.
Grade Level: K
Subject Area: Library (Learner Identity • Reflection • Reader Growth)
Total Unit Duration: 1–3 weeks, 50–60 minutes per session
I. Introduction
This unit invites Kindergarten students to think about themselves as library learners. By the end of the year, students have experienced read-alouds, browsing baskets, informational books, stories from many places, drawing responses, retelling tools, listening centers, sorting tasks, picture discussions, and topic explorations. Now they are ready to name what they enjoy, what they are curious about, and what kinds of library activities help them learn.
The librarian can offer familiar options and guide students in reflecting on their preferences in simple ways. Students may identify favorite books, topics, centers, tools, or response formats and explain why they enjoy them. This supports early self-awareness as readers, listeners, thinkers, creators, and library community members.
