Focus: Engage students in an ELA analysis task where they create a soundtrack for a class novel, short story, or central character by selecting or proposing songs that connect to mood, character development, internal conflict, turning points, symbolism, and theme. Students justify each musical choice using textual evidence so the project stays grounded in close reading rather than personal taste alone.

I. Introduction

Students become literary soundtrack curators in a Soundtrack to a Novel project where music becomes a doorway into deeper reading. Instead of simply choosing favorite songs, students must connect musical tone, mood, lyrics, symbolism, or theme to specific moments in a novel, short story, or character arc. A song might represent a character’s fear, a turning point in the plot, a conflict between characters, a setting’s atmosphere, or the overall message of the text.

The lesson gives students voice and choice while keeping close reading at the center. Every soundtrack decision must be supported with evidence from the literary text. Students explain not only what song fits, but why it fits, how it connects to the author’s choices, and what it helps the audience understand about mood, theme, or character development. The final product can be a playlist annotation project, literary presentation, written analysis, or multimedia display.
